Nancy Shirley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, TX, and a Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.
She has taught choral music in elementary, junior high and high schools in Texas, South Carolina, Puerto Rico and high school choral music in California. Nancy has also been Minister of Music in several churches and Navy Chapels, taught piano and voice privately and directed community choirs.
Nancy taught at Madison High School and at Scripps Ranch High School since its opening and retired from this position in June, 2003. Her choirs have won many superior ratings and have performed extensively both locally and nationally. Her choirs have performed in three Heritage Festivals of Gold and have been selected each festival to be featured on the final concerts.
Her Women’s Ensemble from Scripps Ranch High School sang with the City Ballet’s Nutcracker in Spreckles Auditorium for five years. Nancy has conducted two Elementary Honor Choirs and two Middle School Honor Choirs for the San Diego County Schools.
Nancy served two terms on the San Diego County California Music Educators’ Association Board and two terms on the American Choral Directors’ Association California State Board as the Far South Representative.
Nancy was named the Outstanding Choral Director for San Diego Unified Schools in 2000, receiving the MacKenzie-Haney Award. She served as a BTSA Support Provider for new teachers for three years. Nancy was the Assistant Director and Interim Director of the San Diego Children’s Choirs, 2003-2004 and taught choir at Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway.
In 2008 Nancy directed the Partnership Middle School honor Choir for City Schools.
Nancy received the Retired Music Educator Award for San Diego County Music Teachers in 2008. Nancy directed the youth choir (Coro Vivo) for Escondido Choral Arts at the California Center for the Arts for three years.
In 2015 Nancy founded the Christian Children’s Chorus in Escondido and directs four children’s choirs, a girls’ youth choir called Belles, and an adult choir in this organization. In 2017 Nancy directed combined youth choirs with the area Choristers Guild and has served for many years as an adjudicator for choral festivals through SCVA.
Nancy and her husband, Jerry, and son Jonathan reside in Escondido.
